Phone Anxiety & Doomscrolling: 3 Bible-Based Fixes for Christian Women

May 12, 2025

Push notifications. Panic-inducing headlines. Endless scrolls of bad news. If you’ve ever picked up your phone for one thing and ended up 45 minutes deep in geopolitical chaos, a flash sale, and your third emotional breakdown of the week—this one’s for you.

Let’s talk about it: phone anxiety is discipling more women than the church right now.

And the worst part? We know it’s bad for us, but we don’t know how to stop.

So today, we’re reclaiming calm. We’re taking back our peace. And we’re doing it with three simple, biblical moves to reset your mind, reclaim your scroll, and remember who (and whose) you are.

LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE NOW:

Why You Feel Spiritually Fried (Blame the Push Notifications)

Here’s the stat: the average U.S. smartphone user receives 46 push notifications a day. That’s like a digital tap on the shoulder every half hour. And your brain? It treats every single one like a potential threat.

Whether it’s a breaking news alert, a TikTok DM, or Hollister trying to sell you $17 jeans, your limbic system can’t tell the difference. It releases cortisol—that stress hormone—and before you know it, you’re anxious, distracted, and overwhelmed.

But the Gospel gives us a better way.

Step 1: Pause & Pray (Before You Pick Up Your Phone)

Before you scroll, stop. Before you text, pray. Before you react, pause.

🧠 Brain science confirms what the Bible has said all along: you were never meant to live in constant fight-or-flight mode. Our God is a God of stillness, not chaos.

📖 “Be still and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10

📖 “Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God … will guard your hearts and minds.” — Philippians 4:6–7

God’s answer to anxiety isn’t more information. It’s more intimacy. Turn off the noise and turn your face toward heaven.

Step 2: Filter and Fortify (Guard Your Inputs)

Next, it’s time to declutter your digital life.

Apply the 3 F’s to every notification, app, and input you receive:

  1. Faith-building – Is this drawing you closer to Christ?
  2. Fact-checked – Is it even true? Or is it manufactured chaos?
  3. Farewell-worthy – If it doesn’t pass the first two tests … let it go.

📱 Pro tip: Batch your headline consumption. Want to stay informed without losing your mind? Choose a specific time—like while cooking dinner—to consume news from reputable sources. Then turn it off.

📖 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23

📖 “Take every thought captive to obey Christ.” — 2 Corinthians 10:5

You can’t expect spiritual peace when you’re spiritually polluted. And spoiler alert: you can’t fake your fruit.

Step 3: Swap Scrolling for Serving

The next time you feel the urge to scroll … what if you sent a prayer instead?

Barna found that 39% of Christians report zero discipleship engagement each week. Not because they don’t care. Because they’re distracted.

You weren’t made to binge content. You were made to build the Kingdom.

Start small:

  • Text a prayer to someone.
  • Check in with a friend.
  • Read a Psalm instead of scanning social.
  • Send encouragement instead of emojis.

Discipleship isn’t a church program. It’s a way of life. Jesus modeled digital minimalism long before screens were invented—He regularly withdrew to the secret place, chose solitude with the Father, and acted from peace instead of panic.

Let’s do the same.

TL;DR? Here’s Your Spiritual Reset Plan:

  1. Pause & Pray before you pick up your phone.
  2. Filter & Fortify your inputs using the 3 F’s.
  3. Swap Scrolls for Serving and turn every digital urge into Kingdom impact.

Because we don’t have a time problem—we have a notification problem.

And if you’re ready to be a doer of the Word—not just a hearer or a scroller—then this is your call to rise up.
